While you may have seen fancy gadgets on movies or TV shows where locks were picked or removed in just seconds, in real life, the process is not so easy. Picking, removing, or rekeying a lock can be very difficult and requires skilled expertise to execute correctly. Our professionals have experience with all kinds of locks, as well as the various tools and methods for working on them. As you can imagine, there are many tools needed to safely and effectively pick, repair or replace a lock. Here are some of the tools you may find in one of our locksmith toolboxes.
What's in a locksmith toolbox:
- Followers- When needing to take apart a lock, a follower helps us pull apart and rekey pin tumbler locks. They come in different shapes and sizes for different locks.

- Picks- When we open or pick a lock, we use something called picks. These locksmith tools are thin, wiry tools that look like something you would see at the dentist. The most popular styles of picks are: diamond, hook and rake.
- Pin kit- In order to be able to rekey many kinds of locks, you must have various sizes of pins. Pin kits contain many sizes of pins for rekeying lots of kinds of locks.
- End cap removal tool- This is a tool that helps us take the end cap off of dead bolts.
- Key hooks- We carry around many blanks so that we are ready to make different kinds of keys at any time. Key hooks help us hold all these keys.
- Tension wrenches- We use tension wrenches when picking or replacing a lock. They can be used to hold picked pins in place and to turn the plug and open the lock.
- Shims- These are small, thin metal pieces that can be used to pick a lock.
- Disk buster- This tool is a vise designed specifically for disk padlocks that lines up a drill bit with the plug of the lock so it can be easily removed.
- Magnification glasses- Locksmiths need to be able to see tiny details of locks so we wear glasses with multiple magnification options and lighting so we can see every part of the lock clearly.
- Rekeying staking pin- These tools are designed for use with rekeying locks with chamber caps.
- Decoders- Decoders are templates designed for each brand of key that you can line they key up to and find out which pins to use to make a new key.
- Key tags- Since we have many keys with us, we need key tags to keep them all labelled and organized.
- Keycheck- This helpful tool helps us find the right blank to use.
- Scope- A scope casts a strong beam of light so that professionals can see well enough to pick locks or safes.
- Padlock drill jig- This jig is basically a clamp that holds a padlock in place and allows you to drill into the retainer screw or pin so that the lock may be rekeyed.
- Pin tweezers- Tweezers can hold small things more securely than our fingers can. We use them to hold pins and small pieces.
- Impressioning tool- The impressioning method allows the locksmith to create a new key for a lock without having to pick or disassemble the lock. This tool helps us to execute this method.
- Tubular impressioning tools- This is a specific tool for tubular locks that allows locksmiths to fit keys without dismantling the lock.
